William Watts Folwell and family papers. 1769-1933.

Folwell's papers document his career as a philologist; a lieutenant colonel in the Fiftieth New York Volunteer Engineers in the Civil War; a business man of Venice, Ohio (late 1860s); professor of mathematics and civil engineering at Kenyon College in Ohio (1868-1869); president (1869-1884), professor of political economy (1884-1907), and president emeritus (1907-1929) of the University of Minnesota; a member and president of the Minneapolis Board of Park Commissioners and the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts; a member of the State Board of Corrections and Charities; a Minnesota lawyer (1884-); the author of two histories of Minnesota; a leader in the development of Minnesota's public high school system; and president of the Minnesota Historical Society (1924-1927).
